Will you be running 2.5" & 3.5" form factor? Will you be wiping IDE, SATA, or SAS drives? Do you need to wipe SSD? SSD wiping will need a different wiping process than HDD due to an issue called wear leveling.Wipe Verification - do you want to verify the wipe was completed? This can add time to the process depending on how many sectors you check, or you can just check a random sector to confirm in less than one second.

Wipe Certificate or Log File - is it important to require proof to show someone the specific hard drive with serial numbers listed were wiped? Not all hardware provide these files.If drives are not being re-used, then this is a non-issue. If the drive cannot pass a SMART check, then it is not a good candidate for re-use. SMART check - is the hard drive worth spending time to erase it or not? If you can run a quick SMART check which takes less than a minute, you would be able to determine if you should spend hours wiping the hard drive.And yes, it is safe to allow others to re-use these drives after wiping. This is all assuming the drives are to be re-used. However, not all hardware wiping solutions are equal. Hardware is the easiest way to wipe hard drives.
